Certification enables the issuance of a Certified Health Identifier, a unique number that becomes the patient identifier needed to locate and link patient records across different health information systems. The Certified Health Identifier protects the privacy and security of the patient’s personal health information, acts as a reference pointer to assemble an accurate and comprehensive personal health record, and becomes the foundation for secure, private and complete electronic health information exchange.
